Privacy policy

Known is a food diary for iPhone. It has no accounts of its own, no advertising, no analytics and no tracking. This page says what stays on your iPhone, what leaves it, to whom, and why.

What stays with you: your iPhone and your iCloud

Everything you write in the diary: your records, meals, notes, saved foods, goals and settings. They are stored on your iPhone and, if iCloud is on for Known, in your own iCloud account (Apple's CloudKit private database), so they come back on a new iPhone or an iPad signed in to the same Apple ID. There is no Known account: your Apple ID is the only one. We have no copy of your diary and no way to read it, on your iPhone or in iCloud; Apple stores it under its own privacy policy. Settings on a device that belong to that device (reminders, Apple Health access, the AI permission) are not synced.

You can turn iCloud off for Known in the iPhone's Settings (your name, then iCloud): the diary then stays on that iPhone only. "Delete all data" in Known's Settings erases everything, on that iPhone and, if iCloud is on, in your iCloud and on your other devices signed in to it.

Photos of plates and nutrition labels are used for one estimate and are not kept.

If you connect Apple Health, Known reads your active calories, workouts, steps and weight to show them next to what you eat. Health data is read only, never written, and never leaves your iPhone: it is not sent to us or to anyone else.

What leaves your iPhone

AI estimates (Anthropic). Only if you allow it, when the app first asks or later in Settings. To estimate nutrition, Known sends to Anthropic, the company that makes the Claude AI: what you type or dictate about food, the photos of plates and nutrition labels you take, the names of your saved foods (so an estimate can match them) and, when you use voice, today's records (so a spoken change can be applied). Anthropic does not use this data to train its models and deletes it within 30 days, as its retention policy describes. The requests go through our own server, which holds the key to Anthropic and sees the same data in passing; it keeps none of it (it logs only how long each answer was). Photos of plates and labels are not kept on your iPhone either: they are deleted once estimated. The app itself doesn't name Anthropic; it refers to "an AI provider named in the privacy policy". Without this permission, My Foods, barcodes, the catalog and values you type in still work.

Barcodes and packaged products (Known's catalog, Open Food Facts). Known carries its own catalog of packaged products inside the app: looking a barcode up there sends nothing. Only when a barcode isn't in it, or a photo shows a packaged product, Known asks the Open Food Facts database (a non-profit) for that product's values. It sends the barcode, or the product's name and brand. Nothing about you.

Catalog corrections. When you correct the values of a product with a barcode (by photographing its label or typing them), Known sends us the barcode, the values before and after, where the old values came from, the catalog version and the app's version; for a product not in the catalog, also its name and brand as printed on the pack. We use them only to check and improve the catalog; they never change it by themselves. Never sent: what or how much you ate, when, your diary, photos or your device model. Our server keeps, instead of anything about your installation, a code that only tells whether the same installation corrected the same product twice. Corrections waiting for a connection stay on your iPhone for up to 30 days. You can turn this off in Settings > Privacy & terms > Help improve the catalog.

Voice (Apple). When you talk to Known, what you say is turned into text by Apple's speech recognition, under Apple's privacy policy. The text is then handled as an AI estimate, above.

Send feedback. If you write to us from Settings, we receive your message, the app's version and your iPhone model and iOS version, so we can answer the problem. Nothing identifies you unless you put it in the message. Messages are stored in our database (Supabase, hosted in the EU) and emailed to us (Resend). Write to us to have one deleted.

Our server. To tell real copies of Known from abuse, the app proves with Apple's App Attest that it runs on a genuine iPhone. Our server keeps for each installation an anonymous key identifier, a counter and how many estimates were made today (there is a daily limit). This cannot be linked to you.

IP addresses. Like any server, ours sees the IP address of your connection while it handles a request, and so do the platforms it runs on (Supabase) and Anthropic for AI requests. The platforms may keep it in their technical logs for a short time, as their own privacy policies describe. We never store it with anything else and never use it to identify you.

Known only ever connects over encrypted connections (HTTPS).

Your rights

Under the GDPR you can ask what we hold about you, have it corrected or deleted, or object. Since we hold nothing about you except feedback you chose to send, this normally means a feedback message: write to the contact above and we will delete it. You can also complain to your data protection authority (in Italy, the Garante).

Children

Known is not meant for children under 16.

Changes

If this policy changes, the new version is published here with its date, and the app tells you when something new leaves your iPhone.
